What is the difference between the current Preservation Zone and the proposed Recreation Zone?

The majority of the Preservation Zone is land under the canyon rim (canyon walls). Most land above the canyon rim is currently zoned A1 (Ag) and would be entitled to any uses currently allowed in that zone including Livestock Confinement Operations (LCOs). In addition to the A1 Zone, there are also areas above the canyon rim zoned Residential and Commercial.

Implementing a Recreation Zone would allow the potential development of uses that are recreational or support recreational activities (i.e. walking paths, parks, camping, tourism or event centers, or even a zip line). Public land in the proposed Recreation Zone is managed by state and federal agencies. While Jerome County has no jurisdiction over lands that are owned and managed by state and federal agencies, the proposed zone would apply if the land came into private ownership.
